Under the patronage of HRH Princess Basma Bint Ali, the official headquarters of the National Center for Environmental Justice was opened in a ceremony that included a tour of the center’s facilities and departments, in addition to a meeting attended by representatives of official and international bodies and the private sector.
The opening came as the culmination of years of efforts to convey the idea and importance of the rule of law in the environmental field through a specialized arm capable of dealing with the requirements of the legal stage, especially in light of the global interest in climate change and its impact on human lives.
Dr. Muhammad Eyadat, head of the center, welcomed the princess and thanked her for her constant support for everything related to the environment. He also welcomed the attendees, which included legal specialists and those interested in environmental affairs locally, Arab and regionally.
The opening included speeches by Muhammad Al-Khashashna, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Nidal Al-Oran, Director of the United Nations Development Program, Dr. Omar Abu Eid, Director of Energy, Environment and Climate Change Programs in the European Union, Dr. Hani Al-Shaer, Regional Director of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and Engineer Hassan Wahdani. CEO of Al Nasser Investment Group.
Dr. Muhammad Eyadat, head of the center, which was established in 2012 as the first civil society organization active in environmental rights in Jordan under the umbrella and supervision of the Ministry of Environment, also spoke.
In his speech, he added that the center includes a group of jurists, specialized experts and volunteers in the legal environmental field that believes in the right of all individuals in Jordan, regardless of their social differences, to reach the goal of environmental justice through a clear vision to be a leading center for environmental legal awareness through its mission to raise awareness in Environmental rights and issues to consolidate environmental and climate justice locally and regionally.
The National Center for Environmental Justice is a specialized civil society institution that is open to participation at the local, regional and international levels.
